A rescue mission that many feared would end in tragedy has taken a dramatic turn after five miners trapped underground at Matala Gold Mine in Mumbwa were found alive after 17 days.
The miners had been stuck beneath the abandoned gold mine since May 3, 2026, sparking days of uncertainty as rescue teams and community members worked around the clock searching for signs of life.
Mines Permanent Secretary Dr. Hapenga Kabeta confirmed the development today, describing the rescue operation as successful.
According to Dr. Kabeta, the miners were immediately taken to Mumbwa District Hospital where they are currently undergoing medical examinations. Authorities say all five are in stable condition.
While the rescue has brought relief to many families and residents, the situation may not be over yet. Unconfirmed reports suggest that three other miners could still be underground, with investigations and search efforts continuing.
The incident has also drawn attention back to Matala Gold Mine, which has reportedly been non-operational for more than two years.
Government officials have since thanked the rescue teams and members of the community who supported the operation during the difficult search period.
For many watching the story unfold over the past two weeks, the survival of the miners after more than two weeks underground is being seen as nothing short of remarkable.
