Barrick Lumwana Mine has set aside more than K30 million to compensate 217 residents expected to be affected by the company’s latest expansion project in Kalumbila District, North-Western Province.

The development follows negotiations between the mining company and families living in the affected area, where land is now being prepared for the construction of employee housing.

Speaking during a courtesy call at the North-Western Provincial Administration, Mine Resettlement Action Plan Manager Mwango Mulambia said the compensation process has officially been agreed upon and will support families expected to relocate.

According to Ms Mulambia, the expansion forms part of Barrick Lumwana’s broader growth plans as mining activities continue to increase in the area.

She explained that the company wants the relocation process to be handled in a way that fairly supports affected residents while allowing the project to move forward.

The announcement has already sparked conversation online, especially around the scale of the compensation package and the continued expansion of mining activities in North-Western Province.

Lumwana Mine remains one of Zambia’s biggest mining operations and continues to play a major role in employment and infrastructure development in the region.
