The Zambia Police Service has launched an investigation into a viral social media video showing four masked individuals wielding machetes and allegedly making statements that promote violence.
Police Public Relations Officer Godfrey Chilabi said digital forensic officers and detectives have already begun analysing the footage to establish the identities of those involved. He assured the public that those responsible will be traced and brought before the courts.
According to Mr. Chilabi, the police are concerned by the circulation of the video, saying it depicts suspects displaying offensive weapons in a way that threatens public safety.
He warned that possessing, displaying or using offensive weapons to intimidate members of the public or encourage violence is a serious offence under Zambian law.
Mr. Chilabi also cautioned that anyone using social media or any other platform to incite violence, issue threats or encourage criminal activity will face legal consequences.
The Police Service says it remains committed to protecting public safety and maintaining law and order, adding that investigations are ongoing as officers work to identify everyone involved in the video.
