What began as an investigation into videos circulating online has now led to formal criminal charges against socialite Gezile Smith Mwale.
Police say Mwale has been charged with producing obscene material after allegedly taking part in the production of videos depicting individuals engaged in obscene acts between 22 and 27 July 2026. She is also accused of circulating the videos across various social media platforms.
According to Police spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi, the matter was reported to the Zambia Police Service Anti Cyber Crime Unit on 27 July 2026. Investigations were launched immediately with the support of the Zambia Cyber Security Agency.
Chilabi said the initial investigations led officers to identify and arrest Mwale.
He added that detectives believe she was not acting alone. Other people suspected to have been involved in the production and circulation of the videos have not yet been arrested, and efforts to trace them are continuing.
"The suspect has been formally charged and remains in police custody pending her appearance in court," Chilabi said.
The investigation remains active as authorities continue searching for the other suspects linked to the case.
