President Hakainde Hichilema has commissioned the second phase of the Chisamba Solar Power Plant, adding another 100 megawatts to the national grid and bringing the site's total generation capacity to 200 megawatts.
Speaking during the commissioning, President Hichilema said every new megawatt added to the country's electricity supply helps power more homes, keeps businesses operating at full capacity and creates opportunities for more jobs.
He described the project as a sign that Zambia's ongoing energy sector reforms are beginning to deliver results. According to the President, opening up the energy sector has attracted significant private investment, with more power projects now under construction across the country.
President Hichilema also said the government is intentionally expanding Zambia's energy mix by investing in hydroelectric, solar and thermal power generation. He noted that relying on multiple energy sources will help protect the country from electricity shortages caused by droughts that affect hydro power production.
He added that with continued growth in mining, agriculture, manufacturing and infrastructure, Zambia's demand for electricity will keep rising, making new investments in power generation essential for the country's economic future.
The President concluded by encouraging citizens to continue working together as Zambia expands its energy capacity and pursues long-term development goals.
