Almost two million metres of fabric have already been printed and dispatched by Zambia China Mulungushi Textiles since the Kabwe plant resumed operations in April 2026.
For a factory that had been dormant for more than 21 years, the production figures mark an early sign that the long closed textile plant is finding its way back into operation.
Central Province Permanent Secretary Milner Mwanakampwe says the plant can now produce about 20,000 metres of fabric per day following rehabilitation and the installation of new machinery.
During a tour of the facility in Kabwe, Mr Mwanakampwe said obsolete equipment had been removed and replaced with modern machinery.
He described the production of close to two million metres within two to three months as a significant achievement for a plant that had remained inactive for more than two decades.
The revival has also changed how the company handles orders.
Mulungushi Textiles General Manager Brigadier General Emmanuel Simenti says all the close to two million metres printed so far have already been dispatched.
He says payments are being made as orders are dispatched, with production continuing smoothly since operations resumed.
The company has also expanded its printing capacity from one machine to two following the introduction of a digital printer.
The digital machine gives Mulungushi Textiles the flexibility to take smaller orders of around 2,000 metres. It can also be used for branding T shirts and other clothing materials.
For larger orders, the bigger printing machine can handle between 20,000 and 50,000 metres.
With new equipment now in place and production underway, Mulungushi Textiles is gradually moving from being a closed factory remembered for its long period of inactivity to an operating manufacturing facility once again.
