The final chapter of Dr. Guy Scott's public life was written today.
After five days of national mourning, the former Vice President was laid to rest at Leopards Hill Memorial Park in Lusaka, bringing to a close a period of reflection on the life of one of Zambia's most recognisable political figures.
In the days leading up to the burial, attention shifted beyond the funeral itself. A public debate emerged over where Dr. Scott should be buried. Some youth groups argued that, because he once served as Zambia's Acting President, he deserved to be laid to rest at the presidential burial site at Embassy Park.
The discussion continued across social media and in public conversations, but the government's original plans remained unchanged.
Earlier on Monday, mourners gathered at the Anglican Cathedral of the Holy Cross for a State Funeral Church Service before the procession made its way to Leopards Hill Memorial Park, where family, friends, government officials, diplomats and members of the public paid their final respects.
President Hakainde Hichilema accorded Dr. Scott a full State Funeral in recognition of his service to the nation. The burial also marked the end of the five day national mourning period during which flags flew at half mast across the country.
Dr. Guy Scott passed away on July 15 at the age of 82 after an illness. He made history in 2014 when he became Zambia's Acting President following the death of President Michael Sata, a role that placed him at the centre of one of the country's most significant political transitions.
As Zambia says goodbye, many will remember Dr. Scott for his outspoken personality, years in public service and the unique place he holds in the nation's political history.
