A repatriation trip ended in tragedy on the N1 highway near Musina in Limpopo after a bus transporting undocumented Malawian immigrants overturned just a few kilometres from the Beitbridge Border Post.
The crash claimed the life of the bus driver, while 11 passengers sustained injuries. Emergency responders arrived at the scene and transported all the injured to Musina Hospital, where they are receiving treatment.
According to preliminary information from the Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety, the bus was travelling from temporary shelters in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, to the repatriation centre in Musina when the accident occurred about four kilometres south of the border.
Authorities suspect driver fatigue may have caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle before it overturned. Investigations are still underway to establish the full circumstances surrounding the crash.
The incident has once again raised concerns about road safety on South Africa's busy N1 highway, particularly on long-distance routes where driver fatigue remains a significant risk.
Officials are expected to release more information as investigations continue.
