The journey was supposed to end at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport. Instead, it has become the centre of fresh allegations from the National Revolutionary Party United Party.
Speaking during a media briefing on Monday, NRPUP Presidential Affairs Chairperson Binwell Mpundu claimed that three party members who had travelled to Russia for specialised security training were abducted shortly after arriving back in Zambia.
Mpundu said the three were sent for training as part of efforts to strengthen the security of party leaders Brian Mundubile and Makebi Zulu.
He said the decision followed what the party describes as repeated attacks on its members during campaign activities in different parts of the country.
"Throughout this journey, we have been attacked by the UPND in a number of districts. We decided, as a matter of precaution in trying to save and protect the lives of our presidents, President Mundubile and President Makebi, to have three individuals within our ranks and file go and get specialised training," Mpundu said.
According to Mpundu, the three individuals returned to Zambia after completing the training but were allegedly abducted upon arrival at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport in Lusaka.
He did not immediately provide further details about who he believes was responsible or the current whereabouts of the three individuals.
The allegations add another chapter to the growing political tensions surrounding the country's campaign period. As of the time of publication, the claims had not been independently verified, and there had been no immediate response from the authorities regarding the alleged abduction.
The story is expected to attract significant public attention as more information emerges.
